How to work with the News content type

The News content type is useful for highlighting news and announcements on your website and for publishing articles and posts.

Step 1: Create a news item

  1. Use the platform menu to navigate to Content > Add Content > News.

Step 2: Add news details

Note that a news details page will not display on your website if you opt to link directly to an external URL (as described in Step 3.4, below).

  1. Enter the name of the news in the Title field.
  2. Enter content to display on the news detail page. If you plan to link directly to an external news source you can skip this step.
    1. Provide a concise article summary in the Summary Lede field. This section appears at the top of the news detail page.
    2. Click within the Body area. You can add content, images, and quotes within this section (see Text Editor for details about using the toolbar and text input area). Add your article or post content in this area.
      1. If you would like to add an image within your content, click on the media icon (see Adding an image for instructions for adding an image using the text editor).
      2. Format all of your content and images using the text editor.
    3. Add additional components to the news details page by selecting the Choose component button in the Additional Content section (see Adding a component for instructions on how to add a component). Components added to this section will display in the Bottom Region, below the news content.
  3. Enter the Publish Date for the news item. You can use the calendar controls or enter the date manually into the field. Note that Publish Date does not affect when the news item is published and available on your website.
  4. Add authors to the news item using the autocomplete inputs:
    1. Authors (External) is for authors who do not have a Person profile on your website but are included in the News Authors vocabulary. If an author is not included in the News Authors vocabulary, select Create a new author to create a taxonomy term for the author (see Managing taxonomies).
    2. Authors (Internal) is for authors who have a Person profile on your website. Select their name to link the news item to their Person page.

Use the Authors (External) autocomplete field to add an external author (1), creating a new author if necessary (2). The Authors (Internal) autocomplete field (3) will link the news item to selected person’s profile on the website (see the Internal and External Authors resource for more details).

Step 3: Configure news settings

  1. Add images to display in list components, search results, and on the news detail page.
    1. Add a Thumbnail to display on news lists and search results. To also display the thumbnail image on the news detail page, select Listing Card and Details Page from the Thumbnail Display menu and add an optional Caption. The optimal image size (in pixels) for a thumbnail image is 960 x 540 (see Image Sizes for more details).
    2. Add a Banner Image to display a full-width image at the top of a page. Recommended size for a banner image is 3840 x 1650 pixels. See Image Sizes for more information.
    3. If needed, provide an image description in the Alt Override field. This is only necessary if the alternative text supplied with the image in the media library is not suited to the context.
    4. Select the Mark Image as Decorative checkbox if the image is decorative rather than informative (see When to add alt text for best practices for providing alternative text).
  2. Add a descriptive Excerpt to display on news lists and search results.
  3. We also recommend assigning taxonomy terms to news, to help filter news lists and search results (see Taxonomy best practices and Managing taxonomies for guidance on creating and using taxonomies).
  4. To link directly to an external URL rather than a news detail page, enter the full URL for the article in the Redirect URL field.
  5. The first time you save a news item, we recommend you save as a Draft so that you can preview the news and its links before publishing it to your site (see Publish Status for details about different publication statuses).
