How to work with the Class content type
The Class content type is useful for providing information and details about classes and education programs, linked to an associated class website or learning platform.
Step 1: Create a class
- Use the platform menu to navigate to Content > Add Content > Class.
Step 2: Add class details
- Enter the name of the class in the Title field.
- Select the class semester from the Semester menu.
- Enter the class year in the Year field.
- In the Class URL section, add an optional link, for example, to a class website or learning platform.
- Link text: Short descriptive text. This should be self explanatory to help site visitors know where the link will take them.
- URL: The link destination. This can be either the title of other site content or an external URL.
- Click within the Body area. You can add content, images and quotes within this section (see Text Editor for details about using the toolbar and text input area). Add your content for the class in this area.
- If you would like to add an image within your content, click on the media icon (see Adding an image for instructions for adding an image using the text editor).
- Format all of your content and images using the text editor.
- Add additional components to the class details page by selecting the Choose component button in the Additional Content section (see Adding a component for instructions on how to add a component). Components added to this section will display in the Bottom Region, below the class details.
Step 3: Configure class settings
- To provide a link to the class in the site menu, select Menu Settings and then select the Provide a menu link checkbox and provide the following details:
- Menu link title: The menu link is automatically set to the Title field but you can edit the menu link title if needed.
- Description: In most cases a link description is unnecessary. We recommend leaving this field blank.
- Parent link: Locate the page within the site menus using the Parent link menu. Select <Main navigation> to include the page as a top-level link in the main site menu. Select a section or subsection link as the parent link to include the page as a submenu item.
- Weight: The weight determines the order of the link within the selected menu. We recommend using the menu management features instead of weight values (see Managing menus for instructions on creating and configuring menus).
- Add a descriptive Excerpt to display on class lists and search results.
- Add a Thumbnail to provide additional context about the class for site visitors.
- The optimal image size (in pixels) for a thumbnail image is 960 x 540 (see Image Sizes for more details).
- We recommend assigning taxonomy terms to classes, to help filter class lists and search results (see Taxonomy best practices and Managing taxonomies for guidance on creating and using taxonomies).
- You have the option to add a file attachment to display on the class details page. Supported file formats are: TXT, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, CSV, PDF, and RTF. Make sure any documents uploaded to your site are accessible (see document accessibility).
- The first time you save a class, we recommend you save as a Draft so that you can preview the class and its links before publishing it to your site (see Publish Status for details about different publication statuses).
