# Internal and External Authors

## Internal Authors and External Authors: What’s the difference?

Some content types, such as **News**, allow you to add one or more authors.

- **External Authors**: These are writers who wrote the news story in an external source. For example, the author of an opinion piece in the *New York Times.*
- **Internal Authors:** These are individuals who have been added to your site using the **Person** content type. For example, if you have a faculty member writing a **News** article, you can add them as the author of the piece. This will link the person with the news stories that they wrote.

Authors in **Publications** are automatically added as **Contributors**, with no distinction between external and internal authors. You can view a list of Contributors at **Content > Publications > Contributors.**
