## How to work with the Listing Page content type

The Listing Page content type is useful for providing a filterable and sortable list for a specified content type, such as news, events, publications, or resources, with each list item containing summary details and a link to the full content.

### Step 1: Create a listing page

1. Use the platform menu to navigate to **Content > Add Content > Listing Page**.

### Step 2: Create listing page details

1. Enter the name of the listing page in the **Title** field.
2. Click within the Body area. You can add content, images and quotes within this section (see [Text Editor](/resource/text-editor "Text Editor") for details about using the toolbar and text input area). Add an introduction to the listing page in this area.
3. To add call to action links after the introduction, select the **Add Call to Action Link** button in the **Call to Action Links** section and provide the following details (see [Call to Action Links](/call-action-links "Call to Action Links") for more details):
    1. **Link text:** Short descriptive text. This should be self explanatory to help site visitors know where the link will take them.
    2. **URL:** The link destination. This can be either the title of other site content or an external URL.
    3. **Link Style:** Select a style from the **Link Style** menu options.
    4. **Save:** Select **Save** to save the call to action link. You can add up to two (2) call to action links.

### Step 3: Configure listing page content and layout

1. Choose the content type to display on the listing page from the **Content Type** menu.
2. Add filter and sort details in the **Default Filter and Sort Options** section.
    1. **Filter:** Filter options vary depending on the selected content type. Taxonomy filter fields correspond to the taxonomy vocabularies used with the content type. Other filter fields relate to the content type, for example, the event content type provides an **Included Events** menu with **Upcoming Events** and **Past Events** options. Note that leaving the filter fields empty will result in a listing page that displays all content from the selected content type.
    2. **Sort:** Sort options also depend on the content type. For example, the person content type includes a **Sort By** menu with options to sort by last name.
3. Select the fields to display from the **Field Display** section. Different options will be available depending on the content type. Fields that are disabled are required for the listing page and content type.
4. To include a filter sidebar on the listing page, select the associated checkboxes for filters to include in the **Filters in Sidebar** section. Use the **Move** control to drag and reorder filters. To remove the filters sidebar from the listing page, deselect all the checkboxes.
    1. **Default Filter Display**: This allows you to show the filters in the sidebar either **Open** or **Closed** by default.

### Step 4: Configure listing page settings

1. To provide a link to the listing page in the site menu, select **Menu Settings** and then select the **Provide a menu link** checkbox and provide the following details:
    1. **Menu link title:** The menu link is automatically set to the **Title** field but you can edit the menu link title if needed.
    2. **Description:** In most cases a link description is unnecessary. We recommend leaving this field blank.
    3. **Parent link:** Locate the listing page within the site menus using the **Parent link** menu. Select **<Main navigation>** to include the listing page as a top-level link in the main site menu. Select a section or subsection link as the parent link to include the listing page as a submenu item.
    4. **Weight:** The weight determines the order of the link within the selected menu. We recommend using the menu management features instead of weight values (see [Managing menus](/managing-menus "Managing menus") for instructions on creating and configuring menus).
2. Add a descriptive **Excerpt** to display on search results.
3. We also recommend assigning taxonomy terms to listing pages, to help filter search results (see [Taxonomy best practices](/resource/taxonomy-best-practices "Taxonomy Best Practices") and [Managing taxonomies](/managing-taxonomies "Managing taxonomies") for guidance on creating and using taxonomies).
4. The first time you save a listing page, we recommend you save as a **Draft** so that you can preview the listing page and its links before publishing it to your site (see [Publish Status](/resource/publish-status "Publish Status") for details about different publication statuses).
